the Arlingtonian

Design is the lifeblood of the Arlingtonian, and each element has a unique purpose.

Headline and Header Photo

The Header Photo or Spread is the most important image for any journalistic story. It serves to draw the reader's eye to the page and introduce the story in an endearing way. When a Journalist requests a photo, and when the photographer takes it, they consider a variety of element. These include the location, to provide context for the story, the type of picture and intricacies like light composition and color.

A Deliberate Design

When I began writing for the Arlingtonian, there was one area that struck fear into my heart: Design. I was not an artist and, to be honest, I am still not. That being said, over my three years participating in this news-magazine, I've learned that an artistic soul isn't necessary to create a compelling design. Furthermore, I've also learned about why design matters, regardless of artistic ability. A good design goes hand-in-hand with a compelling story; design helps to draw people's eyes to the page as well as allow people to better understand the content.
